Stavanger maritime museum

About

The museum's exhibitions are located in Stavanger's best-preserved merchants’ buildings. The exhibitons convey the last 200 years of maritime history, craftmanship and trade and the general development of the city.

Some of the exhibitions: 
Working at the Docks, activity exhibition. The museum has recreated a quayside marketplace for children where they can act out life of late 1950s Stavanger. 

The general store, historic interior. The reconstructed shop dates back to around 1910, and is built using decor and objects from a variety of shops in the city.

Shipowner's office, historic interior. The office interior is authentic and belonged to the Monsen family company, which was in business from 1812 to 1977.

The merchant's apartment, historic interior. The apartment is a reconstruction and consists of living room, dining room, home office and kitchen with pantry. The decor shows how a merchant’s  apartment might have looked c. 1910. Through the windows, one of them fitted with sliding mirrors, there are views to the terraced gardens belonging to the properties Nedre Strandgate 17 & 19. Outside the street is also the Groom well, belonging to Nedre Strandgate 17, named after the company Groom & Son, who ran a firm exporting lobster from here.

Sail loft, historic interior. At the very top of one of the warehouses is a fully equipped sail loft. The loft give a realistic impression of the working conditions of the town’s sail makers.
